LION FireLens: AR Fire Extinguisher Training System

Fire extinguisher training could become more accessible and practical for operational workplaces with the introduction of FireLens, a new augmented reality (AR) training system from LION.

The system combines augmented reality software with physical training extinguishers, allowing employees to practise responding to simulated fire incidents in their actual working environments.

Key features of FireLens include:

  • Augmented reality fire scenarios that can be integrated into real workplace environments.
  • Simulated flames, smoke and fire spread without the need for live fires or extinguishing agents.
  • Instructor controls for monitoring trainee actions and reviewing performance.

FireLens is designed to address some of the logistical challenges associated with traditional live-fire training, which can require dedicated outdoor facilities, specialist equipment and additional safety arrangements.

Using AR technology, instructors can position simulated fires in locations such as kitchens, warehouses and production areas. Scenarios can also be customised to reflect different training objectives, with adjustable fire behaviour and environmental hazards.

This enables employees to practise using fire extinguishers while considering the types of conditions they could encounter during an actual workplace emergency. Conducting exercises in familiar surroundings may also help trainees connect their training with the specific risks and operational conditions of their workplace.

The system includes instructor controls for creating and managing scenarios, monitoring participants during exercises and reviewing their performance afterwards. Its portable, wireless design also allows training to be conducted in different areas of a facility.

The introduction of FireLens expands LION’s existing fire extinguisher training portfolio, which includes the BullsEye digital training system.

Although augmented reality offers an alternative to some conventional training arrangements, it does not necessarily reproduce every aspect of a live-fire exercise. Its effectiveness will depend on how it is integrated into a broader fire safety training programme, supported by practical instruction, appropriate equipment familiarisation and established workplace emergency procedures.

By bringing simulated fire scenarios into operational environments, FireLens offers organisations another way to make fire extinguisher training more relevant to the workplaces and situations employees may face.
