Saudi Arabia’s AI Surge Puts Security Frameworks Under Pressure

Saudi Arabia’s rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities across the economy, but the speed of adoption is also raising concerns that security and governance frameworks may struggle to keep pace.

The issue comes as the Kingdom strengthens its position as a regional AI leader. Saudi Arabia has made major investments in AI infrastructure, technology and talent, with the country now ranking among the world’s leading AI investors, according to the World Bank Group. Its technology workforce has also grown to around 426,000, reflecting the scale of its digital transformation, says the World Bank Group’s The World Development Report 2026, The Promise of Artificial Intelligence.

However, according to a warning from Wasna Ben Gassem, Managing Director, Saudi Arabia at TrendAI, reported by Arabian Business, organisations are adopting AI faster than existing security frameworks are evolving. The concern is particularly significant as businesses move beyond experimentation and begin integrating AI into core operations and decision-making.

For security professionals, the challenge extends beyond protecting traditional IT infrastructure. AI introduces new risks around data, model integrity, access controls, third-party platforms and the use of AI agents that can interact with enterprise systems.

The pace of investment across the Gulf makes the issue increasingly relevant beyond Saudi Arabia. The UAE is also pursuing an ambitious AI strategy, while countries across the GCC are investing heavily in sovereign AI capabilities, data centres and digital infrastructure.

This creates a growing requirement for security to be embedded into AI strategies from the outset rather than treated as a later-stage compliance exercise. Organisations will need to consider who can access AI systems, what data models can process, how outputs are validated and how AI-related activity is monitored.

Saudi Arabia’s rapid AI development demonstrates the scale of the opportunity for the region, but it also highlights a potential security gap. As AI moves quickly from pilot projects into critical business and government environments, security frameworks will need to evolve at a comparable pace.

For Middle East security leaders, the message is increasingly clear: AI adoption cannot be separated from AI security. Organisations that build governance, resilience and security into their AI programmes now will be better positioned to capture the technology’s benefits without creating new and potentially significant vulnerabilities.
