Ahlstrom has introduced a new facer for the building and construction industry, featuring its proprietary Flame-Gard technology designed to enhance fire safety and material performance.
The facer resists combustion by charring rather than burning and self-extinguishes once the flame source is removed. Alongside fire resistance, it strengthens insulation boards, helping them remain flat through production and service life while reducing the risk of deformation, creasing, or cracks during lamination.
Balancing flame resistance with low water absorption—two properties often difficult to achieve together—the facer can also be surface-sized to further reduce moisture intake and limit delamination when exposed to damp conditions. Its in-plane structure supports durability during handling and installation.
Developed in response to tightening building codes and growing demand for flame-retardant materials, the product is free from halogens, bromine, and chlorine-based compounds, and is also available in a natural, unbleached version to align with sustainability goals.
Manufactured in Ahlstrom’s integrated mill, where both pulp and paper are produced, the facer benefits from efficiency, quality consistency, and greater oversight of sustainability outcomes.
“The Flame-Gard technology enables customers to improve the fire performance of their products while meeting regulatory standards,” said Eva Thunholm, Vice President of Technical Materials at Ahlstrom. “Its flexibility allows manufacturers to apply it across a wide range of substrates and construction applications.”
For fire and safety professionals, Ahlstrom’s latest innovation underscores how the construction sector is integrating advanced fire protection into materials, combining safety, durability, and environmental responsibility.
